Stainmore Railway Company is based in Kirkby Stephen East Station (KSE), Cumbria on the site of a former mainline railway station.

The line closed to passengers in 1962 having run between Darlington in the North East and Appleby in Westmorland. It formed the junction between the Eden Valley Railway (EVR) and the route to Tebay which joined the West Coast Mainline. The line between Darlington and KSE was known as the Stainmore Route famous for its iconic viaducts and spectacular scenery. The Stainmore Route and EVR predated the iconic Settle and Carlisle Line which still exists today.
