124 page softback book written published by Upper Eden History Society and Ravenstonedale Parish History GroupThe Stockton and Darlington Railway (S&DR) opened on 27th September 1825. It was not the first railway in railway in the world but it was the first public railway; anyone who paid a fee could use the line to transport goods or themselves. This book looks at some of the women who worked for the two subsidary branches of the S&DR: The Stainmore Line across the Northern Pennines and the Eden Valley Railway (EVR) from Kirkby Stephen to Clifton, near Penrith. Both lines closed in 1962 so there are very few first-hand memories today. Fortunately many of the stories have been passed down through the generations. Researchers from two history societies in Upper Eden have collected railway tales - of grandmothers who were crossing gate keepers and of aunts who baked for the refreshment rooms, of wages clerks and engine cleaners. There are memories of passengers too - from the girls who travelled to and from school on the railway and housewives on shopping expeditions. Last, but not least, there are the experiences of women working today, as volunteers, on the two heritage sections of the Stainmore Line and EVR. Although there is some hsitorical background, this is not a history book. As well as finding the names and job titles, the researchers have collected as many of the women's stories as possible before they disappear.
